In solidarity with Autistici/Inventati

Indipendent spaces for digital communication under attack

We are artists, educators, curators, and professionals in the field of digital culture, and we view with concern what has happened to the Autistici/Inventati association.

On August 26, 2026, the United States added the Italian collective Autistici/Inventati to its list of anti-terrorism sanctions, accusing it of providing online services to violent groups. This occurred without any trial and without the association having received any formal complaint. The secondary sanctions resulting from this action prompted Banca Etica to close the association’s bank account and seize the donations deposited by users. These were people who were using the services that Autistici/Inventati offered for free.

With no way to process payments, under the threat of possible individual consequences for the collective and its users, and without a legal framework to defend itself, Autistici/Inventati was forced to shut down.

For 25 years, Autistici/Inventati provided 20,000 email accounts, 10,000 blogs on the NoBlogs platform, 5,000 mailing lists, and 1,500 websites.

It offered these services free of charge to anyone who shared the principles of anti-fascism, anti-racism, anti-sexism, anti-homophobia, anti-transphobia, anti-militarism, and non-commercialism. With the exception of the last one, all of these principles are also enshrined in the Italian Constitution in Articles 3 and 11, as well as in the Twelfth Final Transitional Provision. In addition, Article 21 establishes the right to freely express one’s thoughts through speech, writing, and any other means of communication.

The principles of anti-racism, anti-sexism, anti-homophobia, and anti-transphobia are also enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, in Articles 1, 3, 7, 20, and 21. Anti-fascism is not explicitly mentioned but can be inferred from the articles cited above and from Article 54. Anti-militarism is not explicitly mentioned, but Article 10, Article 3, and the preamble to the Charter make explicit reference to the pursuit of peace and conscientious objection.

Over the course of these 25 years, Autistici/Inventati has provided the opportunity to freely express one’s thoughts through independent digital infrastructures. In this context, freedom of thought and opinion has never been an abstract concept, but a practice shared for 25 years by thousands of people; a practice that has given rise to a vast archive of underground culture built from the ground up. We extend our deepest solidarity to those who have been doxxed by the Trump-aligned right for expressing their views on NoBlogs.org.

Over the past 25 years, Autistici/Inventati has been the place where so many projects in the field of digital culture have come to life and taken root. It has been the place where many have learned what the Internet is and how to be a part of it. Digital culture in Italy would not be the same without Autistici/Inventati. The concept of a free and independent Internet would not be the same.

- We consider it dangerous to set a precedent whereby those who provide communication services could be accused of facilitating acts of terrorism. Because what happened to Autistici/Inventati could happen to others.
- We also consider this incident to be unlawful, as it strikes at the very heart of net neutrality, constitutes collective censorship without judicial safeguards, and could happen to any other platform.
- We believe that the U.S. government’s decision is a violation of the constitutional rights that every citizen should enjoy, both under the Italian Constitution and under the rights enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.
- We hope to see the launch of a legislative debate on Europe’s digital autonomy within the Italian and European political spheres; a debate that asserts the rights enshrined in their founding principles in the face of another government’s overreach.
- We demand that the right to express one’s thoughts be protected as a fundamental and inviolable right in every person’s life, and that it never again be subject to the unilateral decisions of any head of state, the profit motives of an internet service provider, or the control of top-level domain operators.

In solidarietà con Autistici/Inventati

Gli spazi liberi per la comunicazione digitale sono sotto attacco

Siamo artistз, docentз, curatorз e professionistз della cultura digitale e che guardano con preoccupazione a quanto è accaduto all'associazione Autistici/Inventati.

Il 26 agosto 2026 gli Stati Uniti hanno inserito il collettivo italiano Autistici/Inventati nella propria lista delle sanzioni antiterrorismo, accusandolo di fornire servizi online a gruppi violenti. Senza che ci sia stato alcun processo e senza che l’associazione abbia ricevuto alcuna denuncia. Le sanzioni secondarie che questo atto comporta, hanno spinto Banca Etica a chiudere il conto corrente e a sequestrare le donazioni depositate dagli utenti. Utenti che usufruivano dei servizi che Autistici/Inventati offriva gratuitamente.

Senza un modo per effettuare i pagamenti, sotto la minaccia di possibile conseguenze individuali per il collettivo ed i suoi utenti, e senza un frame legale per difendersi, Autistici/Inventati è stata costretta a chiudere.

Da 25 anni Autistici/Inventati offriva 20,000 caselle di posta, 10,000 blogs sulla piattaforma NoBlogs, 5,000 mailing lists, 1,500 siti web.

Offriva questi servizi gratuitamente a chiunque condividesse i princìpi di antifascismo, antirazzismo, antisessismo, antiomofobia, antitransfobia, antimilitarismo e non commercialità. A parte l'ultimo, tutti i princìpi sono sanciti anche dalla costituzione italiana negli articoli 3, 11, e nella XII disposizione transitoria finale. A questi si aggiunge l'articolo 21, che stabilisce il diritto di manifestare liberamente il proprio pensiero con la parola, lo scritto e ogni altro mezzo di diffusione.

I princìpi di antirazzismo, antisessismo, antiomofobia, antitransfobia sono inoltre presenti nella Carta dei diritti fondamentali dell’Unione Europea , negli articoli 1, 3, 7, 20, 21. L’antifascismo non è citato in modo esplicito ma deducibile dagli articoli sopra citati e dall’articolo 54. L’antimilitarismo non è citato in modo esplicito ma l’articolo 10, l’articolo 3 e il preambolo delle Carta fanno un esplicito riferimento alla ricerca della pace e all’obiezione di coscienza.

Nel corso di questi 25 anni, Autistici/Inventati ha dato la possibilità di manifestare liberamente il proprio pensiero attraverso infrastrutture digitali indipendenti. In questo contesto la libertà di pensiero e opinione non è mai stata un concetto astratto, ma una pratica condivisa per 25 anni da migliaia di persone. Pratica che ha dato vita ad un vasto archivio di cultura underground costruito dal basso. Alle persone soggette di doxing da parte della destra Trumpiana per aver espresso il loro pensiero su NoBlogs.org, va la nostra massima solidarietà.

Nel corso di questi 25 anni Autistici/Inventati è stato il luogo in cui tanti progetti nel campo della cultura digitale hanno preso vita e si sono consolidati. È stato il posto dove moltз hanno imparato cosa sia Internet e come farne parte. La cultura digitale in Italia senza Autistici/Inventati non sarebbe la stessa. La concezione di un internet libero e indipendente non sarebbe la stessa.

- Riteniamo pericoloso il precedente per cui possa venire accusato di favorire atti di terrorismo e perseguitato chi fornisce servizi di comunicazione. Perché quello successo ad Autistici/Inventati potrebbe succedere ad altrз.
- Riteniamo altresì illegittimo l'accaduto, in quanto colpisce al cuore la neutralità della rete, configura una censura collettiva priva di garanzie giudiziarie e potrebbe succedere a qualsiasi altra piattaforma.
- Crediamo che la decisione del governo americano sia una lesione dei diritti costituzionali di cui ogni cittadino gode, sia dal punto di vista della Costituzione italiana, sia dai diritti sanciti dalla Carta dei diritti fondamentali dell’Unione Europea.
- Auspichiamo l’inizio di un dibattito legislativo sull'autonomia digitale dell’Europa all’interno della classe politica italiana ed europea. Un dibattito che rivendichi i diritti presenti nei loro principi costituenti di fronte al sopruso di un altro governo.
- Esigiamo che il diritto di manifestare il proprio pensiero sia tutelato come diritto centrale e inviolabile nella vita di ogni persona, e che non possa mai più essere subordinato alle decisioni unilaterali di un qualsiasi capo di Stato, alle logiche di profitto di un provider o al controllo dei gestori di un top-level domain.
